Moldova Sends Defense and Energy Chiefs to Kyiv for Talks

Moldovan Prime Minister Vasile Tofan landed in Kyiv on Monday, October 26, to begin a working visit focused on regional security and energy needs. He is accompanied by a delegation of three senior cabinet members.

The group includes Vladimir Bolea, the Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development, Anatolie Nosatîi, the Minister of Defence, and Dorin Junghietu, the Minister of Energy. Their presence signals a focus on practical coordination between the two governments.

Tofan is scheduled to meet with Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and Ruslan Stefanchuk, the chair of the Ukrainian parliament. A government statement said the leaders will discuss strengthening bilateral ties and expanding economic and trade cooperation.

The talks will also cover the path both countries are taking toward European Union membership. Tofan and Koretskyi plan to attend the Kyiv International Economic Forum together. That event centers on investment opportunities and the development of economic partnerships.

This trip follows a series of high-level contacts in recent weeks. On October 14, Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal met with Tofan to discuss shared energy sector challenges and winter preparations. Two days earlier, Tofan said he was considering buying natural gas from Ukraine for Moldova's domestic use.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu has also weighed into the discussion. She stated that her country is ready to accept a new influx of refugees from Ukraine should the humanitarian situation worsen and force more people to leave.
