The Montana Motor Vehicle Division now handles more paperwork at local exam stations.
Effective this month, drivers can process out of state transfers, title replacements, and registration renewals or replacements while they renew or replace their driver's license. This change allows vehicle owners to complete these transactions at their local MVD office in a single visit. Previously, these tasks often required separate appointments or trips to a central office.
MVD Administrator Laurie Bakri stated that the new process is being implemented in cooperation with participating counties. The division worked directly with county representatives to design the system. Bakri noted that officials from Missoula County and Jefferson County helped develop the plan. She described the selection as a mix of a large county and a small county to ensure the model works in different settings.
Bakri said participating counties have expressed enthusiasm for the update. She noted that the change is expected to reduce wait times at those locations. Bakri explained that county staff are pleased because their customers are happier when they can finish all their business at once. She added that drivers should expect shorter lines at the participating county offices.
The rollout of these new services will happen gradually across the state. This approach mirrors changes made to driver license services in recent years. Counties will only adopt the new process if they choose to participate. The division will expand the program to other areas as the current pilot phase continues.
